Ahh, a new year! A fresh start

There is a saying that goes “If you do this year what you did last year you will end up in the same place next year.” I recently saw this quote, “No one can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending” (Unknown). You have a choice: Life by accident, or life by a plan. Thoughts about change or how to improve one’s self comes up a lot around the Holidays when people start talking about their New Year’s resolutions. If you want to make some positive changes in your life this year, consider these tips as you “GO FORWARD” into 2015.

Resolve to be mentally healthy. Get rid of emotional/psychological “baggage”. Think of seeing a therapist as a mental health oil change and maintenance for the mind. It is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself.

Resolve to be physically active on a daily basis. Studies have shown a link between exercise and improved mental health.

Resolve to act and not react. Step back; breathe; and as your mother probably told you “Stop, Look, and Listen”.

Resolve to relax and enjoy. Take care of yourself! Find some activity that is relaxing and enjoyable to you. Dedicate time to this daily, if possible, or at a minimum, weekly.

Resolve not to define yourself by a label. We often become our labels, e.g., I am depressed, I am fat, I am anxious. Tape a list of 5 positive characteristics about yourself in various places in your home and workplace to remind you of these things. Treat yourself with respect and speak positively about yourself.

Resolve to be mindful. Being mindful is about staying in the moment. I cannot change yesterday; I cannot predict tomorrow, however I do have control over the here and now. So, I will be aware in the moment, and enjoy that moment. Everyday is a gift- that’s why it’s called the present.

Resolve to work towards being the person you want to be. There is an old quote about life being a journey to be enjoyed not an obstacle to be overcome. When we see life as a journey and a time to continue to “become”- then life is much more pleasant and enjoyable.” Keep yourself inspired by anything that inspires you.

Resolve not be hard on yourself. You do not fail by trying.

Enjoy the Journey-The final chapter has not been written – There can be a new ending!
