What is the difference between Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse?

Although alcoholism and alcohol abuse are similar most experts agree that there are differences in the two.  Alcohol abusers have some ability to set limits on their drinking.  However, their alcohol use is still self-destructive and dangerous to themselves, can progress into alcoholism and they need help. Alcohol abuse can lead to alcoholism. Alcoholism or alcohol dependence involves all the symptoms of alcohol abuse, but also involves another element:  physical dependence-  tolerance and withdrawal.

Who is at risk?

Alcohol abuse and alcoholism can affect anyone. It is depilating and life altering  causing problems from in relationships , work and every aspect of a person’s life. It can be particularly damaging to young people. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism can be directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, educational failure, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex and other problem behaviors.

Facts about alcoholism and alcohol abuse

  1. Annually, over 6,500 people under the age of 21 die from alcohol-related accidents and thousands more are injured.

  2. Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America’s young people, and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined.

  3. Each day, 7,000 kids in the United States under the age of 16 take their first drink.

  4. Those who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin at age 21.

  5. More than 1,700 college students in the U.S. are killed each year—about 4.65 a day—as a result of alcohol-related injuries.

  6. 25% of U.S. children are exposed to alcohol-use disorders in their family.

  7. Underage alcohol use costs the nation an estimated $62 billion annually.
